A Mystical Experience

Lockport, NY - While the battle over downtown retail space rages on, and on and on, some entrepreneurs are quietly opening new and unique stores along Main Street.

The newest — and possibly most unique — store is Sister Moon’s Broom Closet.

The store is at 4 Main St., the site of the old tattoo shop, right next to Submarina. Owner Toni Delahunt said the shop features New Age and Wicca items.

Just in case you’re not sure what that is, the store carries an array of incense, candles, soaps, lotions, fairies and angels (not real ones, of course).

Delahunt, who is a nurse at Lockport Memorial Hospital by day, said she decided to open the shop in part because she is a Wiccan and also because “it’s just something I always wanted to do.”

Wicca, a religion whose practitioners are commonly referred to as “white witches,” has its roots in nature.

Delahunt is a second-degree witch, having taken classes in Lewiston in the Cabot Tradition at Amy K’s Mystic Boutique.

And she comes by Wicca naturally.

“My great-, great-, great-, great-, great-, great-grandmother, Martha Carrier, was hung in Salem as a witch. I’m doing a lineage on her and I’ll be hanging it on the wall,” Delahunt said.

Although the shop opened quietly a couple of weeks ago, Delahunt is planning a big grand opening celebration from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. There will be cider, donuts, raffles and door prizes, and psychic readings will be offered for $10.

Delahunt said if the readings are a big hit, she might try to offer them on a regular basis.

After things get settled, Delahunt said she may also offer classes or discussion groups at the site.

“I’ve already had a lot of people come in who are interested, so it’s something I might look into down the line,” Delahunt said.

So as I’ve said a million times before — please support our local stores. Sure, you can run up to Galleria or Boulevard Mall and see the same exact items in every store, or you can look for unique gifts for the people on your list right here in Lockport.

And speaking of a new business in Lockport, the Brewhaus Cafe at 112 Chestnut St. is teaming up with local author Diane Newton to raise money for the Lockport Salvation Army this holiday season.

Newton, an award-winning mystery/suspense author, will be signing her books from 10 to 11 a.m. every Saturday from Nov. 27 to Dec. 18 at the Brewhaus. Special holiday gift prices will be offered on her current titles, “Unusual Destiny” and “Children of the Sun.”

Fans can also win an autographed preview of the first chapters of “Paradigm,” Newton’s newest book set for release in early 2005. The winner will be drawn Dec. 18. It costs $1 to enter, and all proceeds from the drawing, along with $3 from all books sold, will benefit the Salvation Army’s holiday fund drive.

Newton said she came up with the idea because she wanted to help out the Salvation Army as well as a local business.

“I enjoy fund-raising. It’s the best way for me to thank loyal fans and a supportive community,” Newton said.

And if you haven’t been to the Brewhaus yet, you really should go. The coffee is wonderful, and so is the atmosphere.

So get out there and shop right here in our own city.
