City School District Parents
Suggest Standardized Dress

Bay City, Texas - A group of parents told school district officials
that they were disappointed that the proposed change to a 10-year-old
dress code did not include standardize dress.
Members of a dress code committee assembled by the district in January
presented their proposed changes to a group of about 60 parents, teachers
and students Wednesday night at the service center.
The committee, which was composed of teachers, parents and administrators,
proposed that the district adopt some changes, including allowing shirt
tails to be worn outside pants, shorts to be worn under dresses and skirts
for elementary students, no inappropriate decorations or advertisements to
be worn, including signs of the occult, gang membership, death, suicide,
tobacco, drugs or alcohol, no beards to be worn, and no temporary tattoos
to be worn for elementary students.
The committee also proposed more stringent disciplinary measures be taken
when a student violates the dress code, including notification of parents,
in-school detention and suspension.
But some parents complained that the committee should have explored
requiring students to wear a standardized dress of kakhi pants or blue
jeans or long shorts plus a polo-type shirt in Blackcat colors of blue,
gold or white. The present dress code was a failure, said some parents.
"It's not working," said Lisa Morales, a parent who wanted to
see standardized dress. Many students bend the rules, and some students
were not policed even-handedly, one parent said.
Other districts, including Wharton and Palacios schools, have implemented
standardized dress codes.
